Flavours of the Vipava Valley month of cuisine

The Vipava Valley, to the west opening into the plains of Goriška, has long been famous as the land of remarkable wines and culinary pamperings. Wine connoisseurs like to stress that the Vipava Valley is now the most dynamic and attractive winegrowing district in Slovenia. The new generation of winemakers signing their names on the best local wines continue their tradition of nature-friendly winegrowing and the preservation of old indigenous varieties, while their innovation and expertise inspire new blends, raising the bar of wine quality to extraordinary heights. A similar dynamic of quality development is seen in the field of cuisine. Vipava Valley, together with Nova Gorica, was Slovenia's first destination with not one but two restaurants boasting a Michelin star. Many other inns and restaurants proudly display their Gault & Millau recognitions. In the spring months then, don't miss out on special opportunities to taste amazing local dishes. In the framework of the Flavours of Vipava Valley Wine and Gastronomy Festival taking place on 21 and 22 May in the Lanthieri Mansion in Vipava, the Month of Local Cuisine running between 21 April and 21 May invites you to the exploration of the best the Vipava Valley has to offer on its plates. In twenty inns and restaurants, culinary masters prepare special menus with seasonal dishes inspired by local tradition. The choice wine accompaniment also features winemakers of the Vipava Valley who are presenting their craft at the wine and gastronomy festival.

Ultra Trail Vipava Valley race

The Vipava Valley destination is the proud partner of the international endurance running event Ultra Trail Vipava Valley, one of the biggest cross-country races in Slovenia and the wider region. The popular race, combining mountain and city running, offers two ultramarathons 170 and 100 km in length, shorter challenges on 60, 30, 15, and 10 kilometre trails, and a children's race. Over 200 km in total length, the event literally circles the Vipava Valley, skirting the edge of the Kras and in Goriška crossing the Italian border. Hosting the start of all the races is the town Ajdovščina. In the old city core, on the restored Lavrič Square, the remnants of the Roman Fortress Castra play a fascinating setting to the exciting starts of endurance and recreational challenges. This year, organizers are expecting at least 1400 runners from over 30 countries. The Ultra Trail Vipava Valley is a distinct spectator show, especially if you decide to wait for the runners at one of the mountain checkpoints. There, you can also discover the most primordial parts of our colourful landscape webbed with numerous hiking and cycling trails.
