European Capital of Culture 2025
Nova Gorica & Gorica

A unique example of cross-border coexistence in Europe

In 2025 the European Capital of Culture (ECC) will be hosted by Slovenia and Germany, while the Slovenian cultural capital is being jointly represented by the two Goricas, Nova Gorica in Slovenia and Gorizia in Italy.

Nova Gorica is inseparably tied with Gorizia on the other side of the border in Italy, forming a unique conurbation. The cities are connected by a variety of shared stories and a common willingness to overcome boundaries. Divided by wars, united by cooperation and close friendship, the cities will jointly be carrying the title of the European Capital of Culture 2025 under the motto GO! BORDERLESS. They plan to embody this prestigious title through storytelling, intertwining memories of the past and visions of a friendly future while building an effective cultural strategy towards sustainably improving the quality of life of the entire frontier zone.

Though the carriers of the title are the cities Nova Gorica and Gorizia, the featured ECC area will also comprise the Vipava Valley, the Soča Valley, Goriška Brda, the Trnovo and Banjšice plateaus and part of the Kras, while on the other side of the border next to Gorizia including also the area of the Province of Gorizia.

As the underlying thread of the ECC GO! 2025 is fruitful coexistence between the two countries, especially in the area of the frontier zone, the program looks to be compelling, future-oriented and sustainably set, building on the distinctiveness and richness of this remarkable cross-border region. The epicentre of the happenings will be the Europe Square, the square of the two Goricas, since 2004 successfully representing the cohabitation of cultures along the frontier. The planned activities aim to revitalize urban spaces, explore the common heritage of the frontier and acquire knowledge in the field of cultural production, in its essence limitless and boundless in resonance with the fundamental values of European culture. Over 600 cultural events will thus be taking place in 2025, in addition to more than 60 projects.
