Between Lights and Genuine Flavours
Warm hospitality and a touch of magic in the Paradise Valley
Counting down the final weeks of the year, we can indulge in a shopping spree or turn our backs on it and seek fulfilment in new experiences. Growing numbers of travellers wish to spend the end of the year away from the gaudy urban sprawl, searching for true human warmth. In places where the sparks of tradition and hospitality don't need much artificial light. Just enough to find our way in the long evenings to the authentic, vibrant and festive enjoyment.
Experiences amid the nativity scenes and landmarks of the Vipava Valley
In the local culture steeped in rich history, Christian tradition holds a special meaning. Among the many old customs and rituals, building the nativity scene at Christmas is perhaps the most beautiful preserved tradition. In recent decades, nativity scenes have in many places emerged from the intimacy of homes and consecrated church spaces. In some villages they are being placed outdoors, before the fronts and windows of the houses, in the streets and small squares, or in special displays. Nativity scenes thus convey more than just the traditional Christmas message. They have become a wonderful invitation to visit the villages of the Vipava Valley and socialise during the festive season.
Where can you expect the most interesting nativity scenes? For years, the medieval village of Vipavski Križ has been among the first to wear a special Christmas spirit. Dozens of different nativity scenes, including proper little masterpieces, light up the narrow streets of the walled settlement which had market rights already centuries ago. Locals also put on an exhibition of nativity scenes, and you can sample local wines and other delicacies in the central square. Nearby Vipava also boasts more than 100 outdoor nativity scenes. This ancient town, considered the unofficial wine capital of the Vipava Valley, offers many opportunities for wine tasting and culinary indulgence. A little higher up, on the Vipava Hills, the village Goče invites you to its nativity scenes and famous cellars. Did you know that this village used to have more wine cellars than house numbers? It is likely no coincidence that the villages famous for their excellent wines are now also known for their outdoor nativity scenes.
One of the most charming is Tabor above Dornberk, impressing visitors with its characteristic architecture and magnificent views across the nearby hills. According to Christian tradition, all the churches are decorated with nativity scenes at this time, but not all are open all day. We therefore particularly recommend a visit to the Sveta Gora sanctuary above Nova Gorica, where visitors are each year treated to a large exhibition of nativity scenes with international participation. From the top of the mountain, you will enjoy a unique view of Nova Gorica and Gorizia in Italy, twin border cities in 2025 co-hosting the European Capital of Culture.
Tastings as part of local culture
The Vipava Valley is a wine country, and together with Goriška it represents a true culinary paradise. Different cuisines have always met at this crossroads of cultures. Today's restaurants, some of which boast Michelin stars, offer more than enough opportunities for culinary pamperings. You can also combine a nativity scene visit and exploration of cultural sites with a wine tasting at one of the local wineries. Up close and personal with the winemakers on their farms, you'll get a feel for the local way of life while discovering unique wine varieties. Far away from the crazy world ...
