Ancient Roman stories, castles and sacral heritage

Artefacts of colourful history invite you to the discovery of fascinating stories. Amidst the well preserved remnants of Ancient Roman fortifications in Ajdovščina, legends speak of the colossal battle between two aspiring Roman emperors decided by the Vipava Valley's powerful Burja wind. Castles and mansions provide a treasure trove of their own historical accounts. The Lanthieri Mansion speaks of the cosmopolitan spirit, the Zemono Manor of delicious hedonism, the Rihemberk Castle of might and bats, while the Kromberk Castle boasts a rich museum collection. Stirring tales and pearls of sacral culture also abound in the valley's many churches and monasteries. A Franciscan monastery beckons to Kostanjevica above Nova Gorica, cradling the tomb of the final lineage of the French Bourbon kings, the precious Škrabec Library and a great collection of bourbon roses. In the scenic medieval hamlet of Vipavski Križ, a Capuchin monastery will delight you with its famous ancient library and numerous fine arts.
Natural wonders, clear waters and the Trnovo-Banjšice Plateau

Visitors to the Vipava Valley are quickly enchanted by the beauty of the landscape, its diversity and serenity underlined by countless shades of green. The valley is verdant indeed, in all senses of the word. Did you know over two thirds of the Vipava Valley's nature is protected, with a major part belonging to the Natura 2000 area? Among its most attractive natural landmarks you'll find the Otlica Natural Window (Otliško okno) and the ice caves of the Trnovo Forest Plateau's nature reserve. A great wealth of the land are also its water sources. Especially picturesque are the source of the River Vipava, Europe's single delta source formed by several springs, and the source of the torrential River Hubelj. The entire Trnovo-Banjšice Plateau consists of pristine nature, abundant with possibilities for soul-resting leisure. The richness of the Vipava Valley's beauties is rounded out by the protected natural park of the Nanos Plateau, impressing with its biodiversity, much like its counterpart the Trnovo Forest.
