Stories brought to life through wine

Temples of culture and wine cellars of the Vipava Valley

The Cultural Holiday celebrated in Slovenia in February is the perfect occasion for the Vipava Valley to commemorate its own local luminaries who had left an indelible mark on Slovenian culture. Stationed in Podnanos, it was the local priest Matija Vertovec who taught the winemakers from Vipava the ropes of viticulture and winemaking back in the mid-19th century. One of his more obscure achievements is that it was his influence that gave France Prešeren – a giant of Slovenian poetry – the impetus to write an ode to the grapevine. Thus, the iconic poem Zdravljica (A Toast) was born. Much later, in a case of serendipity, the poem was set to music by Stanko Premrl, another local figure. Today, Zdravljica's seventh stanza is the official Slovenian national anthem, and Podnanos in the Vipava Valley proudly holds claim as its birthplace.

Temples of culture

Sun-spoilt and windswept, the valley also houses an impressive amount of artworks. A must-see in Ajdovščina is the Pilon Gallery set in the birth house of artist Veno Pilon, displaying a collection of his paintings, graphic art, photographs and other items from the precious legacy of one of the country's greatest Expressionist painters. Two other galleries are but a stone's throw away: the Lična hiša Gallery and the Lokar Gallery. On the opposite side of the valley, specifically in Nova Gorica, the Nova Gorica City Gallery and three other smaller galleries are also worthwhile. The churches and monasteries scattered across the valley feature a plethora of religious art pieces. As a special treat during the month of culture, we suggest a visit to the Capuchin monastery in Vipavski Križ to see the extensive library with many precious volumes, and a collection of artworks, including the Baroque pièce de résistance – the enormous canvas painting The Glory of the Holy Trinity. An exquisite mosaic produced in 2013 by friar Marko Ivan Rupnik, founder and art director of the Rome-based Centro Aletti, will leave you in awe in the Church of St. Primus and Felician in Vrhpolje.

Celebrating a culture of authentic food and wine

There is archaeological evidence to support the claim that winemaking goes back to the Roman colonization of the Vipava Valley. Ever since, grapevine has been a staple plant, and the knowledge of winemaking has been passed on through generations. In recent decades, local Vipava winemakers have been making efforts to preserve old indigenous varieties and revive traditional cultivation methods to produce premium wines. Natural wine is gaining traction around the world. It shouldn't come as a surprise then that the most popular local dish also incorporates grapes, going beyond a simple pairing of food and wine. The distinctive flavour of the Vipava jota, a local specialty, comes from the grape marc used in the fermentation process of the main ingredient of the dish – fermented turnip also called repa tropinka. Jota remains an ever-popular staple in the local diet. If you visit the Vipava Valley, you can get your serving in many farms, inns and restaurants.

Wine tastings in wine cellars

There is a saying that wine should be consumed in company. Wine tastings have always been a group activity, and for centuries the wine cellars in Vipava have been centres of village life.

Today, wine cellars are witnessing a resurgence of music, poetry and story-telling. Tasting wine directly from the barrel is an experience in itself. Coupled with the stories recounted by the winemakers other truths are revealed as well, such as the passionate love for the soil and unparalleled dedication to hospitality. Visit the winemakers in the Vipava Valley and have a glass of truth.
