Cherry-picked culinary experiences

Foodies have long been aware that the Vipava Valley has so many culinary highlights in May that it's impossible to stay away. Deep red cherries, with the Vipava Valley cherries coming in first, are truly the sweetest temptation. The Zemono Manor House hosts the biggest culinary festival in the Vipava Valley, and the Month of Local Cuisine invites one to try hearty homestyle dishes. Roses give a touch of glamour to the May culinary offering. Don't miss out on this opportunity for indulging your taste buds.

Zemono – the temple of local cuisine

The striking Renaissance-style Zemono Manor House is not just famous for its stunning architecture. Today, the manor houses the restaurant “Gostilna pri Lojzetu” ran by renowned chef Tomaž Kavčič. Recently, the restaurant made the absolute top 3 in the 2018 national competition for the best Slovenian restaurant (The Slovenia Restaurant Award). Chef Tomaž Kavčič, who has lost count of his awards and accolades, presents his delectable creations at the Festival Okusi Vipavske (Flavours of the Vipava Valley Festival) that takes place in Zemono. The festival in which the vintners of Vipava Valley showcase their finest vintages, and provides ample opportunity to taste exquisite food, is the greatest compliment to the wine and food of the Vipava Valley. As part of the main festival, The Month of Local Cuisine will take place until 20 May. Many restaurants, inns and agritourism farms in the Vipava Valley will offer selected dishes made from locally sourced ingredients during this time.

The mountain lodges, inns and restaurants, and agritourism farms serve authentic local fare. Connoisseurs will be overjoyed with the local offering of high-end cuisine.

Bourbon roses in Kostanjevica

The youngest town in Slovenia, Nova Gorica chose the elegant rose as its symbol. The glamorous flower adorns the town parks and lawns and holds a special place in the park of the Franciscan Monastery in Kostanjevica. Thus, the monastery boasts one of the largest Bourbon rose collection in the world, which is in full bloom at this time of year. The Franciscan Monastery Kostanjevica is considered to be one of the greatest cultural sites in the region of Gorica, and is famous for the crypt of the Bourbon dynasty, holding the remains of the last King of France and his descendants. Another worthwhile destination is the Škrabec Library with a valuable collection of old books. From the end of April through the end of May, Nova Gorica hosts the Rose Festival with a varied programme and culinary offer celebrating roses. Using roses in the kitchen is a special culinary challenge. During the festival, rose dishes can be enjoyed in the local restaurants throughout the area of Nova Gorica.
