Vipava Valley Wine Cellars between St. Martin’s Day and Christmas
Tasting the new wine and local delicacies
The Vipava Valley is renowned for its premium wines and numerous wine gems, which place it on the map as one of Central Europe’s most attractive wine-growing districts. Over two-thousand years of cultivating grapevines the Vipava Valley has carved out its own identity, recognized through the preservation of old, indigenous grape varieties, stone wine cellars, and premium-quality wines, made with great respect to nature. This tiny district has burst onto the global wine scene, claiming some of the world’s top international awards and recognitions. Currently the list of the best “natural wines” on Earth, as selected by the professional journal Decanter, features an impressive 3 wines from the Vipava Valley.
The beginning of November, when the St. Martin Day marks that the must has turned into wine, ushers in the season of traditional St. Martin’s feasts and countless other events dedicated to wine, which in the Vipava Valley last all the way up to Christmas. It is a custom for winegrowers from the Valley to invite everyone who helped in picking the grapes to the first tasting, and many others pour a glass for all connoisseurs of Vipava wines. Some villages in the Valley hold collective St. Martin feasts, and other villages pick a day where all their winemakers invite guests in for a tasting. The Vipava Valley also hosts several Osmica events during this season, events where the region’s wine cellars open their doors to visitors, and many renowned restaurants and inns invite guests to try seasonal specialties.
For 2 decades now the Vipava wine road has been attracting guests to a number of autumn events under the joint name of ‘Vipava Valley Wine Cellars between St. Martin’s Day and Christmas’.
This year’s string of events, which will see guests flocking to the Valley for the 24rd time, get underway on 3 November and last until 21 December. During this time the exciting program is distributed so that visitors can attend several events in different places, truly getting to know the rich diversity of the Vipava Valley’s wines and gastronomic delights, deep culture legacy, and the authentic joy and enthusiasm that accompanies the year’s biggest wine holiday.
These events are organized every year by the ROD Development Agency in Ajdovščina, which also supplies visitors with all other relevant information.
